Neuve Chapelle Cemetery

Sir Herbert Baker designed this cemetery in Northern France to commemorate the Indian Army's war dead from the First World War. It is interesting to see Oriental motifs and architecture in a Northern European context. The cemetery also had memorial plaques added in the Cold War when the Zehrensdorf Indian Cemetery was no longer accessible to the British due to its location in East Germany. The commission still honoured its commitment to honour the dead in perpetuity even when they had no access to the graves themselves.
