Born c1873, the son of Walter Langton of Wandsworth and Gatcombe House, Isle of Wight. His mother was Letitia Pownall. Herbert joined the KDG as a 2nd lieutenant on 8 Oct 1890, promoted to lieutenant on 7 Sep 1892. The photo shows him as a lieutenant in Norwich in 1894. In that year he and Captain Birkbeck were the officers in charge of the escort provided for the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York. He was promoted to Captain on 4 June 1898. The army list mentions the Army Pay Department next to his name which suggests that he was the regimental Paymaster.
He served with the regiment in the Boer War and is mentioned in an officer’s diary as going out at midnight with C Squadron on 21 July 1901 and capturing 5 wagons and 4 Cape Carts. In January 1902 Langton escaped injury when two of his fellow officers, Captains Quicke and Williams were killed and Lt Harris was wounded.
He left the KDG in 1907 and was on the reserve of officers, but recalled to serve in WW1. He commanded the 10th Entrenching Battalion, 1st Brigade of Guards (Cavalry) for which the London Gazette of 15 June 1916 announced that Major Langton had been mentioned in despatches. He was also in the Gazette of 4 Jan 1917. He was married on 18 April 1898 to Antoinette Gelale and had four children, 3 sons and a daughter born between 1899 and 1912. Major Langton’s date of death is not known.
