Standards 1693

These illustrations of 1693 Standards are by Rev Percy Sumner who wrote an article ‘Uniforms and Equipment of Cavalry Regiments from 1685 to 1811’ published in the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research Vol XIII no. 50 (Summer 1934). They were printed as drawings but I have coloured them according to the information provided. The MR cypher in this case refers to Mary II (Regina) who was married to William III. She was the daughter of James II and his first wife, Anne Hyde. Mary reigned jointly with William from 1688 until her death on 28 Dec 1694.

Two Standards of the regiment taken at Landen (Neerwinden) on 29 July 1693, as shown in the MS Book at Windsor Castle, copied from ‘Les Triomphes de Louis XIV’ in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. These Standards are drawn exactly square, without the fringe (although Sumner has added the fringes)

1. Crimson; [Colonel’s] gold embroidery and fringe M R cypher reversed in centre with crown over, and the same [crown and cypher] in each corner; silver scroll work border.
2. Yellow; [Lieutenant-Colonel’s or Captain’s] gold embroidery and crimson fringe; M R cypher reversed in centre (without crown) and the same in each corner.
