The bell-top shako had this large badge on the front. The order of December 1828 called for changes to the uniform and laid out details for the shako. The badge for all regiments is described: ‘The large gilt universal star plate, surmounted by a crown, six and three eighths inches deep and five and a quarter inches wide, with the silver star plate from the previous shako superimposed.’
The previous silver star plate was very ornate, having red and blue enamel in the centre and a green laurel wreath around the garter. This plate only lasted a few years as it was very expensive.
