The order for the rank and file infantry issued on 22 Feb 1839 removed the star plate on the bell-top shako and replaced it with this round circle surrounded by a wreath of laurel (on the right) and oak leaves (on the left). Victoria had acceded to the throne in 1837 so the crown was changed slightly. The flank companies had similar badges but with the addition of either a stringed bugle or a grenade. This style of shako plate was retained after the bell-top was exchanged for the Albert Shako in 1844.
