When the new Albert shako was introduced for the infantry in late 1843 the star plate was redesigned. It was predominantly all gilt for officers so that it was difficult to distinguish one regiment from another. But the King’s Regiment adopted a more distinctive badge in the centre of the star. It was the garter with motto, oval in shape, with the silver horse galloping head down to accommodate the smaller motto NEC ASPERA TERRENT, and the etched VIII, all on a crimson velvet backing. The addition of the Egyptian Sphinx augmented the distinction. The title KINGS is in Old English script beneath the Victorian crown.
