The reduced size of the 1861 infantry shako called for a smaller badge. This gilt star plate has a rearing horse and VIII both in silver on a crimson background. The size of the plate is 3.5 inches deep and 2.75 inches wide. Other Ranks had a plate of the same shape, but all brass with the number 8 cut out of the centre.
