Standish Henry Harrison


Standish Henry Harrison was born in County Cork on 27 Feb 1853. He was the eldest son of Henry Harrison JP of Castle Harrison, Charleville, and his wife Marianne Stein. He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and commissioned into the King’s Regiment as a lieutenant on 2 Dec 1874, promoted to captain on 1 July 1881. He was adjutant of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.

He served with the 2nd Battalion, King’s Liverpool Regiment in Burma in 1885-87 and was promoted to major on 19 Nov 1890. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel and commanded the battalion from 11 August 1897. He exchanged to the Royal Munster Fusiliers and commanded the 3rd Militia Battalion from 1902 to 1905. For the next two years he was in charge of Infantry Records, North Midland Group of Regimental Districts. In 1906 he was appointed to the command of South Ireland Grouped Regimental District. In WW1 he commanded a brigade from 1914 to 1916 and then was on Special Duty in France from 1917.

He married Amy Georgina De Barry on 14 July 1880 and had eight children. Brigadier-General Harrison died in County Cork on 18 Dec 1953 at the age of 100. His wife Amy had died in 1951 aged 92. The photo shows him in the dress uniform of a brigadier-general c1913.
