Llewellyn Salusbury Mellor


Llewellyn Salusbury Mellor was born on 7 Jan 1853 at Coldingham, Beds. He was the son of Abel and Laura Mellor. He was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion, King’s Regiment as a lieutenant on 15 Jan 1875 and later appointed Adjutant of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Liverpool Regiment. His promotion to captain was on 1 July 1881 and to major on 26 Nov 1890. He served with the 2nd battalion during the Afghan War of 1878-80 and was present at the action of 28 Nov 1878 in the Kurram Valley and at the battle of Peiwar Kotal.

He was appointed to command the 1st Battalion in Feb 1899 and went with them to South Africa. They operated in Natal in 1899, including actions at Rietfontein and Lombard’s Kop. He was in command of the regiment during the Defence of Ladysmith for which he received the clasp for his Queen’s Medal. On the night of 7 Dec 1899 Colonel Mellor and 3 companies of the battalion seized Limit Hill, thus creating a gap through which a squadron of the 19th Hussars were able to penetrate some 4 miles to the north, destroying the enemy’s telegraph line and burning various shelters.

He was married to Margaret Jane Davidson and had one child, Charles Offley Mellor (1886 - 1964). Colonel Mellor died at Tollgates, Battle, Sussex on 14 Jul 1929. The photo shows him in khaki service dress in command in Natal, South Africa.
