Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry


Major R Bickersteth BA


Robert Bickersteth was born on 24 June 1846. He was the son of the Bishop of Ripon and Elizabeth Garde of Cork. He was educated at Eton and Corpus Christi College, Oxford, graduating with a BA in 1869. He was inspector of Factories from 1873 to 1880 and Private Secretary to Lord Kimberly, the Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1880 to 1882, going on to be Private Secretary to Lord Kimberly who was now Secretary of Sate for India, from 1882 to 1885. He was Liberal Unionist MP for Newport, Shropshire from 1885 to 1886. He was a captain in the Sherwood Rangers from 1878 to 1882. On 16 Jan 1883 he married Lady Lavinia Bertie, daughter of the 6th Earl of Abingdon. They lived at 70 Cromwell Road, Kensington SW7. He died without issue on 10 July 1916. In this photo Bickersteth is in levee dress uniform of the Middlesex Hussars with the rank of major c1891. The tunic is dark green with black velvet facings and gold cord and braid decoration. The breeches are also green with gold lace stripes. The busby has a green bag and green over red plume.
