Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

RSM, Mounted Drill Order c1894

The Regimental Sergeant-Major has a more distinctive stable jacket than the rank and file. The collar and cuffs are edged with gold braid, the cuff braid having a trefoil loop at the point, which on his right arm is laid over his four inverted stripes. There is an embroidered crown above the stripes which is a regimental NCO arm badge. The shoulder straps have gold lace around the edge, and from this view the braiding on the back of the jacket can be seen, following the seams and ending in a trefoil loop. The sergeant-major’s forage cap is green with a gold lace cap-band and gold braid around the top edge and around a gold button on top. This top decoration is similar to the officers’ caps but a smaller design. He does not have a carbine like the private but his sword is attached to sword slings that can just be seen, slung from a hidden waist-belt. His white leather pouch-belt has a black leather ammunition pouch that is less bulky than the private’s pouch, so that it is probably more decorative than functional.
