Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Other Ranks' South Africa Uniform 1900

These men wear the uniforms issued for the Boer War. The date of the photo is not known for certain but they look like fresh uniforms so probably the photo was taken before embarkation for Cape Town. They probably belonged to the 11th battalion that contained two companies of Middlesex Hussars but there were five other companies contributed to other battalions. The tabs on their collars must be dark green, and the star badges are regimental. The seated figure shows a shoulder strap that is also dark green and bearing the brass letters MIY, Middlesex Imperial Yeomanry. He is a trumpeter, holding a bugle which has strings over his left shoulder. The two standing men have the early pattern of canvas ammunition bandolier. The slouch hats are in good shape. After several months of trekking and skirmishing they would soon become shapeless. Their khaki uniforms also have pointed cuffs which are traced with green braid that have trefoil designs at the point.
