Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Other Ranks in Camp c1920

This photo of an informal group of NCOs and troopers of the Middlesex Yeomanry was taken in the years soon after WW1. One man is recognisable as Sergeant Edgar Thirkell who is standing on the extreme right. He joined the Middlesex Yeomanry when he was demobbed in February 1919. He has medal ribbons for the Great War. He, like some of the others, has a white lanyard on his left shoulder. Others, like the corporal standing with an unbuttoned tunic, have a dark coloured lanyard. The uniforms are all of WW1 pattern but mostly with stiffened forage caps. Interestingly, the rank badges all have crowns over them, a regimental rather than a rank badge. The two corporals show two types of crown badge; embroidered and metal. The cap badges are all of shiny metal except for the seated man in the foreground who has a dull badge, perhaps bronze, on his unstiffened cap. We are very grateful to Pat Phillips whose great aunt was married to Sgt Thirkell for sending us this and the following 1937 photo.
