Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Edgar Sidney Thirkell worked for a telephone company in civilian life but in April 1912 he joined the 13th Battalion London Regiment and was appointed to the Signals section. He later transferred to the Yeomanry and was mobilised on 4 Aug 1914. On 12 April 1915 he sailed with them to the Dardenelles. He fought in the Gallipoli campaign and was evacuated along with the remaining force, to Alexandria. He was in Palestine fighting at Beersheba from Aug to Oct 1917. In May 1918 he was attached to Jacob’s Horse on the trek to Jericho. He was demobbed in Feb 1919 and joined the Middlesex Hussars. He left the regiment in September 1934 when it was a Signals unit. His medals include the Territorial Efficiency Medal. His brother Graham was also a member of the Middlesex Hussars but was killed at Gallipoli.
