Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Trooper H S Deane

H S Deane was the son of Colonel George Deane of the 13th Bengal Cavalry. According to an account written by Trooper G Webster, Private Deane took part in the mounted charge against the Boers on the kopje east of Senekal and was firing from the lying position after they dismounted. He was shot in the forehead and rolled over dead. This occurred on 25th May 1900. Another account by Trooper F J B Lee who was taken prisoner says that Trooper Deane had received his commission that day.
