| James Howard McIlwraith was the younger of the two McIlwraith brothers who died in the Boer War. Like his brother he was an original member of the Middlesex Hussars, and like him voluntarily relinquished his corporal rank at Maitland. When he fell ill he was left in medical care at Sterkfontein on 5 Jan 1901. He died at Winburg of enteric fever on 22 Jan 1901, five weeks after his brother, and was buried at Winburg. |
