Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry


Trooper John Clifford McIlwraith


The two McIlwraith brothers came from Campbellfield, St Albans, Herts. They were both original members of the Middlesex Hussars. John Clifford McIlwraith was the elder brother, originally a sergeant but reverted to Trooper voluntarily at Maitland. He was captured by the Boers at Senekal on 25 May 1900. He was released and returned to action at Harrismith on 14 Oct 1900. He became ill and had to be left at Reitz on 7 Dec. He died there of enteric fever on 17 Dec 1900 and was buried in the Reitz cemetery. His brother died 5 weeks later.
