Lieutenant Basil Napier


Basil Napier, born on 16 March 1879, was the son of the Hon Mark Francis Napier and Emily of Puttenden Manor, Lingfield, Surrey. His grandfather was Francis, 10th Lord Napier. He was a Trooper in the 34th Company IY but promoted to corporal at Knightsbridge Barracks in Jan 1900. After Senekal on 25 May 1900 he was promoted to sergeant. He was commissioned at Harrismith on 1 Dec 1900 but on 27 Dec, at Senekal again, he was wounded in the wrist and stomach. He died of his wounds the next day, on 28 Dec 1900 in Senekal. He is buried in the cemetery there, next to Major Dalbiac.
