Charles Thornton was educated at Rugby and Cambridge where he gained a double Blue. He was involved in the capture of a Boer, with Lt Roller, at Bethlehem on 22 Sep 1900. He was wounded in the arm at Newmarket on 7 Nov 1900 and invalided home from Harrismith on 30 Nov. His address was 1 Mount Street, London. He was promoted to lance-corporal on 25 May 1900 after the battle at Senekal. The photo shows how the breeches had to be patched at the knees.
