Middlesex Duke of Cambridge’s Hussars, Yeomanry Cavalry

Trooper Richard Unwin

Richard Unwin was born in Valparaiso, Chile on 2 Aug 1879. He was the son of George Unwin of Heldersley, Spencer Road, Buxton. He was educated in Chile and was a lieutenant in the Chilean National Guard. He was one of the men posted to the north Cossack Post near Senekal on 25 May 1900. When Prinsloo’s Boers launched their attack, his post was targeted and the men of the 34th Company had to retreat. Unwin had trouble with his horse and was shot through the lungs as he mounted. He managed to get away and was given medical treatment in Senekal. But there was little hope of his recovery and he died at midnight.
