The first uniform of the Royal Horse Artillery followed the basic style of the light dragoons which had worn blue uniforms since 1783. The artillery already had blue uniforms so it was natural for the RHA to retain blue coats, with red facings. There are few portraits of officers wearing this uniform and it is fortunate that this miniature, dated 1794, by George Chinnary has survived. The officers has a high red collar and red lapels with buttons each side. The waistcoat is white with gilt buttons and he has gilt shoulder scales with a bullion fringe. The sword belt on his right shoulder has a gilt oval belt-plate which is unlike the silver ones worn a few years later. The Tarleton helmet has a red turban and a gilt badge on the side. |
