Gunners on Campaign 1814

The uniform of the other ranks in the RHA is depicted carefully by Denis Dighton in his watercolour of the gunners manhandling a gun. PW Reynolds’ copy of two of the figures illustrates the back of the braided jacket. It also gives us a clear view of how the sword is attached to the shoulder-belt. The Tarleton helmets have blue turbans and white plumes, although the nearest gunner has his plume encased in a protective cover. The helmets at this stage have brass chin-scales. The grey (salt & pepper) trousers are neater than the former overalls that were buttoned all the way up the outer seam. However, it is surprising that the leathered ankles were not worn on campaign.
