Gunner, Dress Uniform 1815

Hamilton Smith’s mounted gunner has several similarities with the gunner in Goddard and Booth’s 1807 print. He has a shoulder-belt for his sword with a rectangular brass plate. His jacket is well covered with yellow braid and there is also braid on the back as shown in the P W Reynolds copy of Dighton’s 1814 painting. It was quite rare to see gunners in white breeches and knee boots in this period as they were kept busy on campaign and would normally wear overalls or grey trousers. He has a sword on the near side and pistols in holsters on the front of his saddle covered with a bearskin. A blue cloak is rolled up on the back of the saddle and he has a small blue saddle cloth with a red edge. The gun team behind him is driven by men who, judging by the braided uniform, appear to be RHA rather than men from the Royal Artillery Drivers corps.
