Private and Farrier 1816

This is another Sumner copy of a Sauerweid painting in the Royal Collection. This one is illustrated in Haswell-Miller's and Dawnay’s book but only in black and white. It’s informal composition gives it the stamp of authenticity so that we can believe that this is what the artist saw. The uniform of the farrier is very interesting especially as there does not seem to be any other depiction of an RHA farrier at this period. His cap is almost a hussar busby but with a peak and a badge on the front. The farrier badge of a horseshoe is described as white but Sumner has made it yellow. The jacket resembles the one worn by the NCO driver with yellow braid forming a frame with the buttons. The plume on the side of his busby is white over red. His overalls are leathered up the inside leg and around the ankles. He is armed with a sword slung from a waistbelt.

The private has his chin-scales tied up over the bearskin crest. His helmet plume is encased in a waterproof cover. He wears a voluminous coat with a cape and carries his sword and scabbard on his shoulder with the waist-belt wrapped loosely around it.
