Gunner and Horse 1849

This is a detailed contemporary painting by R Scanlon, of a gunner of the RHA in the uniform worn during the Crimean War. The busby was worn from 1837 and the 5-row buttoned jacket adopted in 1840. This painting shows the red and yellow barrel sash with red cords looping round from the back. The cap-lines are also red, looped around the neck and hooked up on the left shoulder. There is no white plume on the front of the busby so this is not review order. The white leather pouch-belt on his left shoulder is depicted in the Martens painting of 1840 as having a spring clip for a carbine but there is no sign of such a weapon here and the hanging end of the belt appears to be rolled up. He is armed with a light cavalry sword of the 1829 pattern, suspended from a white leather waist-belt.
