Sentry 1854

This less detailed image of a horse gunner in dress uniform agrees with the Scanlon painting of 1849. But here the man has a firearm. This was the Victoria carbine, designed by George Lovell. A percussion weapon with a 26-inch barrel of musket bore, fully stocked and having a swivel ramrod. The uniform has some mistakes: the plume on his busby should be all white. The collar is incorrectly braided, and the cap-lines should be red.

This lithograph was drawn by William Sharpe and published by E Gambart & Co of 25 Berners Street, London. They produced 9 sheets containing 12 prints on each. The sheets were produced between April 1854 and May 1856. This RHA gunner was on the second sheet published 10 July 1854 to show the uniforms of the army sent to the Crimea.
