The Bengal Horse Artillery had subdivisions manned by European gunners, and subdivisions manned by Indian gunners. This detail of a contemporary image of 1841, painted by Lieutenant W S Pillans an officer in the 3rd Troop, shows European gunners riding the draught horses and Indian gunners wearing dismounted white overalls. They rode on the gun, rather than the limber. The artist wrote at the base of the painting, “Cawnpore” 3rd Troop 3rd Bde Bengal Horse Artillery 1841 G Campbell Capt Comg. |
