Troop Officers’ Rank Badges 1864

These illustrations are taken from the 1864 RA Dress Regulations showing the dress uniform collars of both RA and RHA Troop officers, i.e. lieutenants and captains. Lieutenant was the lowest officer rank and was indicated by a silver and coloured embroidered crown as per the top illustration. The lower illustration shows the rank badges of a captain; an embroidered star and crown, both silver with some colour. These are sewn onto both sides of the red collar which has gold cord edging, laced around the top and front edge with gold lace. This system lasted until 1881 when rank badges were transferred to the shoulder cords and a silver grenade badge was sewn on the collar.
