Field Officers’ Rank Badges 1864

Majors and brevet-majors indicated their rank on both sides of the collar with a single silver and coloured embroidered star badge as seen at the top of this illustration from the 1864 RA Dress Regulations. The dress collars of field officers differed from the Troop officers in that they had gold lace along the bottom as well as the top of the red collar. Lieutenant-colonels had an embroidered silver and coloured crown badge on each side of the collar as seen in the lower illustration. Full colonels had a crown and star. After 1881 the rank badges were worn on the shoulder cords and a silver grenade badge was worn on the collar.
