Officers’ Collar Badges 1881

This close detail of a Victorian officer’s uniform shows the silver embroidered grenade badges worn either side of the collar. These replaced the rank badges sewn on the collar before 1881. After that date the rank badges were removed to the shoulder cords. This uniform is that of a field officer. Officers ranked major and above had gold lace along the top and bottom of the collar so that the red facing colour could barely be seen. The silver grenade badge was worn by the RHA as well as the RA in dress uniform throughout the 20th century and still worn by officers of the King’s Troop today.
