E Battery Badge 1936

This silver metal badge, with the cypher of Edward VIII, was produced soon after the death of King George V. It has the same overall design as the George VI and Elizabeth II badges and therefore was the first appearance of the RHA badge that has been used continuously since 1936. It is not known how long this badge was worn before the news came through that Edward had abdicated. But the author of the article from which this photo was reproduced ended the piece by saying: β€˜In writing this article I am most grateful to the late Lieutenant-Colonel J S Batten (Retired) for his help and personal recollections on the subject. Colonel Batten joined β€œE” Battery in 1936 as a gunner and eventually became its Commanding Officer. He probably had the unique distinction of being one of the few, if not the only person, to wear the cypher badge of four Sovereigns.’
