Richard Allason Bannatine was born on 22 Sep 1855 at Glaisnock House in Cumnock, Ayrshire. His father, Dr Richard Cuninghame Bannatine was an army surgeon to the 58th Regiment, and his mother, Charlotte Owen was Australian, the daughter of Assistant Commissary General Stephen Owen. Richard entered the RA as a lieutenant on 28 Jan 1875 (listed in 1880 as Richard Allason Bannatine). During the Boer War he commanded G Battery RHA (Mercer’s Troop) and brought distinction on the RHA for the Troop’s actions at Magersfontein where they fired a record 1,250 rounds. Major Bannatyne-Allason, as he had been known since 1885, was mentioned in Lord Methuen’s despatch. He was a JP and Deputy Lieutenant of Ayrshire. He died in 1940 at Sunninghill, Berkshire.
