NCOs of D Battery 1896

This group of junior NCOs was published in the Navy & Army Illustrated on 10 July 1896. Twenty one men are in the photo, in dismounted stable dress, but the original caption tells us that the battery has 30 NCOs: 3 staff sergeants, 6 sergeants (each in charge of one gun), 9 artificers, 6 corporals and 6 bombardiers. The status of warrant officer was introduced in 1881 but only for very senior NCOs like the Brigade Sergeant Major. The most senior staff sergeant of D Battery at this stage was Battery Sergeant Major Christopher Carnaghan whose photo appeared in the same publication on 11 Dec 1896.
