Harness Ornament, Early 19th Century

The date of this brass ornament is not known. It is either a martingale badge or a bit boss. The device is the ancient symbol of the Riding House Department of Her majesty’s Ordnance which dates from 1802. The badge above the oval garter could be Georgian which dates it between 1802 and 1837. The oval shape was most likely the inspiration for the shape of the 20th century cap badge worn by the RHA on their berets.
