Guns Ready to Fire 1846

The drivers remain mounted with the limber as the five men of the gun team prepare to fire. Numbers 6 and 7 of the gun team attend to the limber which has been opened up and the padded seats tilted up. The harnesses on the draught horses can be clearly seen. Prior to 1853 the harness was made of black leather, and the bridles fitted with blinkers, but in December of that year the leather was altered to brown and the blinkers dispensed with. The harnesses were different for the front horses and the wheel horses at the rear. There is no mounted officer visible in the foreground as would be expected, and there are no NCO stripes to be seen. This and the accompanying print of guns being fired are in the M A Hayes - Spooner Oblong Series.
