No.1 Marching Order 1846

The artist G B Campion drew a series of six ‘principal evolutions’ of the RHA dedicated to the Master General of the Ordnance, Sir George Murray. (He also produced another series of six prints for the RA.) They were published by Ackermann. This is no.1 Marching Order showing the gun and limber in remarkable detail. The bucket hanging below the gun was for the Sponge Man to wet the sponge end of the ramrod. Trumpeters can just be seen at the front of the column. The mounted officer on the left has an undress sabretache. The harnesses and equipment are all clearly shown. A windmill can be seen in the background which was a landmark on Plumstead Common. This windmill was also a feature of Heath’s print of 1836. A closer detail of the gun and limber can be seen below.
