Lead & Wheel Draught Horses 1883

These contemporary diagrams show the differences between the harness of the front and rear horses. The front horse is near-side and saddled for the lead driver. The wheeler in the rear is an off-side horse but without the valise and equipment worn in marching order. The wheelers are distinguished by the broad breeching (3) strap which goes around the rump and prevents the carriage from bumping into the animal when the team comes to a halt.
