The gun in this painting is the 12-pounder breach-loader developed in the 1890s and used in the Boer War. There are four individuals in attendance on the gun, including the sergeant who lays the gun, standing on the right of the picture. The gunner, standing the other side, fires the gun by pulling a cord.
