British Empire Title

Royal Horse Artillery

Battery in South Africa 1900

The caption tells us that the RHA is ready to take up position to meet a Boer attack at Slingersfontein. Because of the similarity of the khaki service dress it is difficult, from this distance, to distinguish between Royal Field Artillery and the RHA so this captioned photo is valuable. Close up the RHA could be identified by the ball-shaped buttons. The three drivers stand by their horses. It is difficult to tell if the gun is the usual 12-pounder or a howitzer. The gunners behind the gun are dismounted and next to them are two mounted figures, an officer and a sergeant most likely.
