Riding Master C A Quist

Captain Quist was a Hanoverian brought over to England to carry out the duties of Riding Master for the Royal Artillery, specifically the recently raised Royal Horse Artillery. The artillery horses came under the Riding House Department of His Majesty’s Ordnance. King George III gave express orders for his employment which dated from 1 Jan 1803. He was 72 years old at the time of his appointment and he was given a commission with the rank of captain. Quist was a student of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna where they trained horses by tethering them between two pillars as represented in the badge of the Riding House Department. Captain C A Quist died on 26 December 1821 at the age of 91. He was still working up to the end of his life, and his horse, Wonder, also lived to the great age of 41.
