Sergeant R G Read

Richard George Read fought in WW1 from the age of 14. He served in Palestine and Egypt, and remained in the army, serving mainly in the Middle East, until 1936. He was in F (Sphinx) Battery RHA based at Abbassia Barracks, Cairo. He re-enlisted when WW2 broke out and was commissioned, but he was captured by the Japanese. Upon his release in 1946 he suffered ill-health and died a year later. He was married to Daisy Marion Preston on 2 July 1927 at the British Embassy in Cairo. We are grateful to his grandson Simon Burgess for supplying the information and photos. The photo above shows him as a young man in RHA dress uniform. The portrait below shows him in the service dress of a captain. The wedding group shows Sergeant Read in dark blue uniform standing behind his seated bride. The photo of him running was taken in front of Abbassia Barracks.
