Colonel Sir Robert MacDonald CB

Robert MacDonald was commissioned into the RHA in 1795 and became lieutenant-colonel in 1825. He had served in the Peninsula War and commanded a Troop of Horse Artillery at Salamanca. He was awarded the Army Gold Medal and created a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1815. The portrait is by Sir Henry Raeburn who lived from 1756 to 1823, so the portrait, which is undated is before 1823. Andrew Cormack, in 2015, dated this portrait for Sotheby’s as 1816-17 but I would say c1820 on the basis of the closed collar which was a feature of military fashion at that time.
