Officer’s Sabretache c1834

W Y Carman dates this sabretache as 1833 in his booklet Full Dress Sabretaches of the British Army published by the Military Historical Society in 2000. But the design continued up until the end of the 19th century and has more of a Victorian feel about it. It seems that the authorities were perturbed by the different battle honours that adorned the officer’s sabretaches and wanted to standardise them. The Latin word Ubique was chosen to cover all the theatres of war and was added to all the sabretaches of artillery officers, and put an end to the resentment that must have been felt by those Troops that had not served abroad. Sadly this design was intended for both the Royal Artillery and the Royal Horse Artillery so it is not possible to ascertain whether this is in fact RHA.
