Horses On Board the Transport

Artillery horses stabled in the hold of the transport. The animals had to be lifted by crane and lowered into the hold through the opening seen here. This illustration was published in the Illustrated London News in 1854. The gunners tending the horses have trousers similar to their dress trousers but they wear loose smocks and woollen hats. The shaded figure in the centre foreground wears stable dress.
