Lieutenant-General W G Knox KCB


William George Knox was born on 20 Oct 1847, the son of General Thomas Edmond Knox and Lucy Maunsell. He entered the army in 1867 as an officer in the RA and went to Abyssinia with them the following year. He also served in the Third Ashanti War in 1874, the Russo-Turkish War in 1877, the Second Afghan War in 1878, and as a captain in the Zulu War in 1879. He commanded the RHA at Curragh Camp in 1881 and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in October 1891. In the Boer War he was a colonel and fought at Ladysmith. He was elevated from CB to KCB on 29 Nov 1900. He remained in South Africa until May 1902 and then returned to Britain as a major-general on the staff commanding the artillery of 3rd Army Corps in Ireland. In 1905 he was appointed GOC 8th Division in Ireland until his retirement in 1910. He was married to Alice Dundas in 1889. Lieutenant-General Knox died on 14 Dec 1916.
