Wellington’s Funeral

This print of the funeral procession passing in front of Apsley House shows the former position of Wellington Arch. The building on the left of the print is Apsley House, the home of the Duke of Wellington, gifted to him after his victory at Waterloo. Wellington Arch, built c1830, has an enormous equestrian statue of the Duke on top. The statue is no longer there; it was moved to Aldershot in 1882 and replaced by another huge statue of Winged Victory in a quadriga chariot. The Arch itself was moved further away, at the same time, in 1882-3. It is still in front of Apsley House but is now at right angles to the position seen in the print, in the middle of Hyde Park Corner.
