Officers in India 1867

The officers in this group were photographed at Nowshera in 1867. The 1st Battalion were posted to India in the latter part of the Mutiny in 1859 and stayed for 13 years until 1872. The unusual white helmets were the first pattern foreign service headgear for the infantry. They are worn by officers on the right and left of the photo, and by two colour-sergeants at the back. The undress hot climate frock can be seen on most of the officers. It is scarlet with gold braid on the cuffs, collars, down the front, and on the left breast pocket. Other officers wear the blue patrol jacket with black braid. Two ensigns hold the Colours and stand behind a stack of regimental drums on which is draped the drum-major’s sash.
