Field Officer 1877

This photo of J Anderson was taken in 1877 when he held the rank of Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel. He is in mounted review order which meant that he would wear breeches and boots instead of trousers. The top of his boots can just be seen in this photo. Also in mounted order he would have a sabretache which is suspended from two slings attached to his waist-belt. The black leather sabretache has a badge which appears to be a rose with a title underneath, although this is unofficial and contrary to a general order of December 1876. His tunic is the 1868 officers’ dress tunic, scarlet with green facings. It has pointed cuffs, which cannot be seen here. The collar has gold lace around the top with braid formed into circlets and a crown badge. This indicates the rank of lieutenant-colonel. The circled braid can also be found on his cuffs, either side of the double row of gold lace. His shako, on the table behind him has only one row of lace around the top, together with a row of thinner braid underneath. This indicates the rank of major and shows that his brevet rank does not permit the double row as ordered for lieutenant-colonels, or that he has not yet had the shako altered.
