Officer, Nile Campaign 1885

The khaki foreign service dress was worn in the initial stages of the 1884-85 campaign in Egypt and the Sudan. Later the regiment were ordered to wear their scarlet frocks, famously making their last appearance in battle at Ginnis on 30 Dec 1885. The officer in this photo, named as Captain F B Briggs, wears a lightweight tunic with regimental badges on the collar. He has two metal rank stars on each shoulder strap. The buttons down the front are gilt but the breast pockets have oddly small studs to fasten them. He wears the brown leather Sam Browne belt to support his sword, and another strap on the left shoulder to support his revolver. A lanyard is attached to the butt of the firearm and loops around his neck. There is an ammunition pouch on the front of his waist-belt. His jodhpurs are of a different material, referred to as brown cord pantaloons in the Dress Regulations of 1900.
