Mounted Infantryman, Boer War 1902

This excellent photo of an eager-looking private of the Yorkshire Regiment shows the khaki uniform clearly, with brass buttons and regimental collar badges. He has the old 1881 pattern leather bandolier on his right shoulder although it is usually seen on the left shoulder. To provide him with extra ammunition he has a waist-belt with button-down flaps of varying size. His bayonet hangs on his left hip. He holds the newly issued Lee-Enfield Mark 1. The magazine for this rifle allowed ammunition to be pushed in quickly from a metal clip, but his bandoliers would not be able to carry clipped rounds.

His slouch hat is very neat and has a handsome hackle attached. The badge on the upturn is not the normal shape, and he has dark metal shoulder badges. The regiment provided companies for the 2nd and 4th Mounted Infantry Battalions which were active in drive operations during the last phase of the Boer War in 1902.
